Miesha Tate Suffers Broken Orbital Bone In Decision Victory Over Sara McMann

UFC Women’s Bantamweight contender Miesha Tate suffered a broken orbital bone in two places as a result of a shot from Sara McMann in their UFC 183 FS1 preliminary main event fight on Saturday night in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Tate, the former Strikeforce Women’s Bantamweight Champion and former UFC Women’s Bantamweight title contender described the injury during the UFC 183 post-fight press conference, which you can watch in full by clicking here.

“I have a really bad headache right now,” said Tate at the post-fight presser. “[McMann] clipped me pretty good in the first round and actually broke my orbital bone in two spots, so I can’t look down and this bright light over here is not very comfortable, to say the least. She’s as tough as they come, and she can pack a punch, that’s for sure.”

“I know it doesn’t look bad,” Tate said of the physical appearance of the injury, “but it feels pretty crappy.”

Despite the brutal injury, Tate rallied in the second and third rounds to pull off a come-from-behind majority decision over the Olympic silver medalist.

With the victory over the number three ranked UFC Women’s Bantamweight contender on Saturday night, Tate remains the number two ranked contender in the division, and with three straight wins inside the Octagon, she moves even closer to her goal, which is to secure a third fight with UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey.

“I suppose it depends who wins,” Tate said of her chances of receiving another title shot. “If it’s Ronda, obviously I think I have a little bit more work to do. If it’s Cat [Zingano], I think a better argument could be made.”

Tate continued, “So we’ll see who wins out of those two. But I’ve already told everyone that I’m willing to do what it takes to get back to that. I’m not asking for it right now. I’m not asking for any handouts. I’m willing to put my nose to the grindstone. I’m willing to beat all the other top contenders until I am the only option left if that’s what I have to do.”
