Paul Heyman Talks About CM Punk Possibly Fighting In MMA

WWE personality Paul Heyman appeared as an in-studio guest on Ariel Helwani’s “The MMA Hour” show on Monday afternoon. During the show, Heyman talked about a wide array of MMA and pro wrestling topics, one of which was the possibility of former WWE Superstar CM Punk entering the world of mixed-martial-arts.

Punk’s contract with WWE recently expired and the man who refers to himself as “The Best in the World” has vowed to “never, ever” return to the professional wrestling ring.

“I think CM Punk’s mind set is to never come back, and their [WWE] mind set is they never want him back,” Heyman said on Helwani’s show on Monday. “He’s driven and determined never to go back. He feels that if he ever goes back, it’ll be a sign of failure on his part. His success in life is predicated on the idea he never goes back.”

Heyman then switched topics to MMA, claiming Punk could potentially follow the likes of Brock Lesnar, Bobby Lashley, Dave Bautista and others who have transitioned from professional wrestling to mixed-martial-arts.

“Punk has always had the opinion that at its core, when the cage door gets locked it’s two really capable people punching each other in the face until one drops,” said Heyman. “Sometimes the skill level is overrated, and the ability to just fight comes into play. He’s educated in MMA. He’ a very serious student of the disciplines and he’s become far more entrenched.”

Heyman concluded, “He’s a fighter at heart. One of the things that makes it so interesting is he came into the wrestling world as a fighter who ended up performing, not a performer making a transition into the fighting world.”
