UFC 236 Results: Poirier Decisions Holloway After War

Last night (Sat. April 13, 2019) UFC 236 took place live on pay-per-view (PPV) from the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. The UFC had two interim championship fights on deck for their featured bouts. First, Israel Adesasnya and Kelvin Gastelum went head-to-head for the interim 185-pound throne.

And in the main event of the evening, UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway faced Dustin Poirier for the interim lightweight championship. There were plenty of other great fights on tonight’s card.

Main Card:

  • Lightweight: Max Holloway vs. Dustin Poirier

Round 1:

Poirier lands a nice leg kick and front kick to the body. Holloway with a nice jab, but eats a big left hand from Poirier. Holloway follows up with a big right hand and drops Poirier. A big right hand lands for Poirier and he swarms Holloway. Big shots landing for Poirier against the cage, and Holloway isn’t backing down.

More big shots from Poirier. Holloway is hurt. More big shots from Poirier but Holloway isn’t going down. Holloway firing off big shots now, but Poirier responds with some big ones. More big shots from Poirier, and Holloway lands a nice counter shot. The round comes to an end.

Round 2:

Holloway with a jab to the body. A nice lead hook lands from Holloway. Big leg kick from Poirier. A nice right hook from the clinch lands for Poirier. A big left hand lands for Poirier. Holloway lands a kick to the body and Poirier lands a nice counter shot. Another big clip from Poirier and he rocks the Hawaiian. Poirier has Holloway against the cage. Another big hook from Poirier and he follows up with an uppercut. The round comes to an end.

Round 3:

Poirier lands a nice counter right hook. Leg kicks from Poirier land and he follows up with a good jab. Hook to the body lands, followed by a jab for Poirier. Big hooks land for Poirier and he follows up with a leg kick. A big left hook and right jab land for Poirier. Holloway sneaks in a right hand. Holloway is starting to put together some punches now.

Holloway continues to land now, but Poirier is still resopondsing with good counter strikes. Holloway has Poirier against the cage now. Poirier in on a takedown now against the cage. Elbows from Holloway to defend the takedown. The round comes to an end.

Round 4:

A nice right hand lands for Holloway. Poirier ducks a shot and gets the takedown. Holloway defends and gets a knee to the body to separate. A nice counter right hand lands for Poirier. Holloway pouring on the volume now, he has Poirier against the cage. Poirier is very tired, Holloway still has some gas left in him. A knee from Poirier cuts open Holloway badly. Poirier firing off with some big shots now. Holloway is bleeding terribly. Poirier going in on a takedown now. Holloway locks in a D’arce to end the round.

Round 5:

Leg kick from Poirier to open the round. Holloway gets a nice jab off, and follows up with another. Poirier with a big hook and jab. More shots from Poirier now, and he lands a nice counter hook. A jab lands for Poirier, Holloway presses forward but Poirier goes in on a takedown against the cage. The pair slug it out for a few seconds to end the fight.

  • Middleweight: Kelvin Gastelum vs. Israel Adesanya

Round 1:

Hard kick to the body lands for Adesanya. Gastelum catches Adesanya with a hook and Adesanya stumbles. Gastelum is just missing on some of his shots, and lands a jab. A nice lead hook lands for Gastelum and the round comes to an end.

Round 2:

Adesanya with another body kick. Gastelum responds with a shot to the body of his own. Gastelum responds with a big jab to an Adesanya head kick. Another big big combination from Gastelum, and Adesanya fires back with a head kick. Adesanya catches Gastelum and he drops. Gastelum gets back to his feet and they’re striking again. Adesanya is starting to put his shots together.

Another big shot lands for Adesanya. A spinning elbow lands for Adesanya and Gastelum is rocked. Another head kick from Adesanya and Gastelum fires back with a left hand. Adesanya stuffs a takedown and Gastelum lands a left hand to end the round.

Round 3:

Gastelum gets a kick to the body. He follows up with a jab and Adesanya hits a body kick. A nice right hand lands for Adesanya and he follows up with a beautiful counter right hand on Gastelum’s chin. Adesanya with another nice combination. Gastelum lands a nice hook but can’t follow up.

Gastelum lands a nice counter hook. Gastelum gets a takedown but Adesanya shoots to his feet quickly. The round comes to an end.

Round 4:

Gastelum coming out with pressure, trying to back Adesanya against the cage. A clean right hand lands for Adesanya. Gastelum fails on another takedown attempt. Adesanya landing some nice counter shots now. Gastelum is landing some nice shots in the pocket as well, but Adesanya doesn’t seem to be too affected by it. Gastelum has Adesanya hurt, and now these guys are exchanging.

Round 5:

Gastelum comes out with pressure, Adesanya is looking a bit gassed. Amazing scrammble on the ground in which Adesanya nearly pulled off a triangle. Adesanya lands a nice combination on the feet. Adesanya lands some nice shots that snap Gastelum’s head back. Adesanya is connecting now, but Gastelum is sgtill pushing forward.

Takedown attempt from Gastelum fails. Gastelum gets knocked down but gets to his feet with a takedown attempt. Another knockdown for Adesanya, he brutalizes Gastelum on the ground until the round comes to an end.
