UFC, NSAC React To Jones-Cormier Brawl At UFC 178 Media Day

Following their wild brawl at the UFC 178 media day in Las Vegas on Monday, many have questioned what the repercussions will be — if any — for both Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier.

While nothing has been officially decided as of yet, both the Nevada State Athletic Commission and UFC have commented on the situation, with UFC’s Chief Legal Officer going as far as to guarantee that “there are going to be ramifications from the UFC for these actions.”

NSAC chairman Francisco Aguilar was more vague when commenting on the subject, simply stating, “it’s too premature for [the NSAC] to comment,” and that “upon review of the video and follow-up questions, we can [then] make an assesment.”

Kirk Hendrick, the UFC’s CLO, told UFC.com following the brawl, “This is certainly not a proud moment for the UFC organization. We expect more from our athletes, especially these two gentlemen, who are very well-trained and highly educated professionals. Their actions were clearly a violation of the UFC’s code of conduct.”

Hendrick noted that UFC will make a decision on how they respond to the situation based on how the NSAC reacts. “We are going to reserve our right to penalize both fighters after the commission has made a decision,” said Hendrick. “We expect more from our athletes and we are prepared to levy sanctions to reinforce the appropriate behavior.”

“There are going to be ramifications,” he concluded. “Whether you’re the champion, or this is your first fight in the UFC, there are going to be ramifications from the UFC for these actions.”
