Urijah Faber recently spoke to MMAFighting.com about his unique standing in the current UFC Bantamweight rankings.
Faber, ranked number three in the division, trails only champion TJ Dillashaw (his friend and training partner), Renan Barao (number one ranked contender who has defeated Faber twice) and longtime rival Dominick Cruz (who beat him in their last meeting and is scheduled to challenge Dillashaw in his next outing).
Regarding a possible fight with Raphael Assuncao, the last man to defeat Dillashaw and a guy who is ranked right behind Faber at Bantamweight (and is likely to earn a title shot in his next outing, if the Faber match doesn’t materialize), “The California Kid” admits that it’s a match that doesn’t really “excite” him.
Faber made the following comments about a potential match with Assuncao, who he actually defeated in their 2010 meeting:
“Fighting Raphael Assuncao isn’t that exciting to me. I have nothing against him, he’s a good guy and a good fighter. I just think there are other challenges out there that could be better for me. I mean, if Assuncao was a fight the UFC wanted, I wouldn’t say no to it. I’ve never said no to any fight the UFC has asked of me. It’s not a fight I’d lobby for. Right now I’m willing to wait and see what comes up.”
