UFC 246 went down tonight (Saturday, January 18, 2020) from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The world’s leading mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion compiled an excellent card for fight fans to enjoy.
It was headlined by a meeting between Conor McGregor and Donald Cerrone in a welterweight bout.
Before this fight was official, Cerrone had been pushing for a fight against the former UFC lightweight and featherweight champion. So much so that there was even talk that the fight could take place at UFC 239 on July 6, 2019. That didn’t happen at the time obviously.
The co-headliner saw Holly Holm vs. Raquel Pennington in a women’s bantamweight bout. The main card featured Maurice Greene vs. Aleksei Oleinik, Brian Kelleher vs. Ode Osbourne, and Carlos Diego Ferreira vs. Anthony Pettis.
Conor McGregor vs. Donald Cerrone
McGregor landed a series of shoulder checks that busted him up and made him bleed from his nose. McGregor stunned him with a head kick then landed a series of strikes up against the fence and finished him with strikes on the ground in round one.
Holly Holm vs. Raquel Pennington
Round one saw a slow pace as they mostly clinched up against the fence as Holm was landing strikes and knees. Pennington was pinned up against the fence for the majority of the round. Round two saw the exact same and the fans were upset with what they were seeing. Pennington was just too willing to hang out in the clinch and try to be the physically dominant fighter. In round three, they started to let their hands go and Pennington popped her a few times before going back to the clinch. In the end, Holm got the decision win.
Maurice Greene vs. Aleksei Oleinik
Oleinik fell after missing a wild strike but got back to his feet. Oleinik scored a takedown in round one. Greene teased a triangle choke but couldn’t get it. Oleinik went for the scarfhold choke but Green landed several hammerfist shots and survived the round. In the second round, Greene landed a series of knee strikes in the clinch. Oleinik scored another takedown and landed some big shots from top position. Oleinik finally got him to tap with an armbar.
Brian Kelleher vs. Ode Osbourne
Kelleher scored a takedown then landed some punches before locking in the guillotine choke for the win in round one.
Carlos Diego Ferreira vs. Anthony Pettis
Ferreira stalked him down while Pettis was throwing a mixture of strikes in round one. Ferreira managed to get a takedown before taking his back and working him over with strikes. Pettis spun out and we are back to striking upright. At the end of the round, Ferreira scored another takedown. The second round once again saw Ferreira score a takedown. Ferreira tapped out Pettis with a rear-naked choke.
