A female British boxer is beginning a long road to recovery after suffering a life-threatening medical emergency during a sparring session in Denmark.
Former world title challenger Raven Chapman collapsed shortly after training on July 24 and was airlifted to a nearby hospital, where doctors diagnosed her with a brain hematoma and cerebral edema. Both conditions involve bleeding and swelling of the brain.
The 32-year-old underwent emergency surgery to stop the bleeding and stabilize the swelling before being placed in a medically induced coma, according to an update from her management team, Vote Boxing.
In a statement shared on Instagram, the promotion said:
Raven underwent emergency surgery immediately. The procedure successfully stopped the bleeding and helped stabilize the swelling. She was then placed in a medically induced coma.
The latest update offered encouraging news, confirming Chapman has since been taken off sedatives and is continuing treatment while preparing to return to the United Kingdom under medical supervision.
Over the past day, she has been taken off the sedatives and is continuing to receive treatment while awaiting medically supervised repatriation to a hospital in the UK, where her rehabilitation is expected to take some time.
Vote Boxing added that Chapman’s doctors are doing everything possible to aid her recovery and remain hopeful as she continues her rehabilitation. Her family has remained by her side in Denmark throughout the ordeal.
A GoFundMe campaign has also been launched to help support Chapman during her recovery, while messages of support have poured in from across the boxing world, including veteran promoter Frank Warren, who wrote on X:
