Israel Adesanya is not proud of his fight with Yoel Romero.
The two met in the UFC 248 main event in March 2020, with Adesanya defending the middleweight title in his first reign. Both men were known for knockouts, but the fight went 25 minutes with little action, and Adesanya won a decision.
Adesanya looked back on the bout in a recent YouTube breakdown, following Romero’s decision loss to Darren Till at BKFC 94.
I had one of the most exciting fights in the history of the planet that’s inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame, but I also had one of the most boring fights in the history of the company alongside Yoel Romero.
The exciting fight Adesanya mentioned was his interim title win over Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 236.
Adesanya said one big shot from Romero changed how he approached the fight.
We’re both dangerous men. When he hit me with that zinger, I seen four in front of me, and I thought, ‘OK, he’s going to come in for the kill.’ So whoever comes, if I saw four of them, then it would have been four, then I’d have to pick which one, but he didn’t.
He put the blame on both sides.
He just played the game and yeah, it was a boring fight. But he’s a dangerous man. There’s a reason he didn’t want to come close and there’s a reason I didn’t want to risk again getting hit by that zinger, so yeah, shout out to him.
Most of Adesanya’s video focused on UFC 332, which has drawn criticism for its card. Natália Silva and Wang Cong headline the event on Saturday in Salt Lake City for the vacant flyweight title. Valentina Shevchenko vacated the belt due to an injury.
Adesanya does not think the card is as bad as people say. He believes it is missing star power and storylines.
This is how you get people involved, the lead-ups, the Embeddeds of fight week, the Countdown, the fighters doing their own vlogs.
Even though you guys want to clown WWE, you love a storyline. Everyone likes a storyline.
