The University of King’s College has launched the Jordan Breen Award for Sports Reporting, a new honor named for the late MMA journalist and King’s alumnus.
Breen, a 2009 graduate of the Halifax university, died in June 2025 at age 38. He spent nearly two decades as one of the most respected voices in MMA media, working at Sherdog, ESPN.com, Bloody Elbow and The New York Times, and hosting The Jordan Breen Show on the Sherdog Radio Network.
The award, worth $1,000 annually, will recognize an outstanding sports media project produced by a King’s journalism student. It was established and funded by friends of Breen, who raised the money through a dedicated campaign following his death.
MMAjunkie senior reporter Mike Bohn, a longtime friend of Breen and one of the organizers behind the fund, announced the award’s official launch on X.
Friends of Breen remembered him as someone who was endlessly generous with offering both time and opportunities to those who were seeking their start in the sports media world. That spirit is the driving force behind the new award, which will be presented annually to a King’s student producing standout sports coverage.
Breen’s death last year drew tributes from across the combat sports industry, with journalists and fighters alike crediting him as a foundational figure in shaping modern MMA coverage.
