Rei Tsuruya is slowly building himself up as a fighter to watch at flyweight, adding another first-round submission at UFC Shanghai to his record in his win over Kevin Borjas.
The grappler Tsuruya pursued a takedown almost right away and got it with a little bit of work. Tsuruya dominated the fight from there, keeping Borjas down while working him over with some ground-and-pound.
Borjas was able to get to his feet at one point, but Tsuruya quickly got him back to the mat. There, he got Borjas’ back and was able to lock in a choke to score the submission.
Tsuruya has now won back-to-back fights, coming into today off a first-round submission of Luis Gurule in May. Tsuruya is 12-1, with his sole loss coming against current flyweight champion Joshua Van at UFC 313.
