Sean Strickland Apologizes to Dustin Poirier After Walking Back Depression Comments

ByAndrew RavensMixed Martial Arts Journalist

Sean Strickland has walked back his criticism of Dustin Poirier after speaking with the retired fighter directly, saying he regrets mocking him for opening up about depression following his public drunkenness arrest.

Strickland had initially told Poirier to “shut the f*ck up” about what he was feeling and suggested that “male depression” is not real. After the two spoke, Strickland posted a retraction on X.

I spoke to Dustin and he is legitimately messed up by his actions. I thought he was just doing PR cleanup tbh. I guess not everyone is a POS like me lol. So yeah I repent and I am sorry Dustin. Hope Budlight does the right thing with this one. He deserves the help.

The Bud Light reference came after Poirier mentioned losing a major sponsor as a result of the arrest. Strickland appears to be assuming the departed sponsor was Bud Light.

Poirier was arrested at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson airport on Father’s Day for public drunkenness, later posting publicly that he needs help with alcohol and describing thoughts about his estranged, homeless father as the emotional trigger behind the incident. He received public support from Jon Jones, Daniel Cormier, and Matt Brown, among others, following the arrest.
