Islam Makhachev Drops Retirement Bombshell Amid UFC Backlash

Islam Makhachev hints at retirement while defending his decision to skip UFC 336, insisting he wants to face the toughest challenger in the final stretch.

Islam Makhachev has suggested that his time inside the Octagon could be approaching its final chapter as he continues to defend his decision not to compete in January.

The UFC welterweight champion has faced mounting criticism since withdrawing from plans to headline UFC 336 against Carlos Prates. The promotion subsequently booked Prates against undefeated contender Michael Morales for the interim welterweight title, leaving Makhachev expected to return later in 2027.

The decision has also drawn criticism from UFC CEO Dana White, who believes the division cannot remain inactive while its champion waits for a preferred return date.

Islam Makhachev Explains Why He Wants to Face the Best Contender Before Retirement

Makhachev has repeatedly pushed back against suggestions that he is avoiding dangerous challengers. The Russian previously argued that Prates needed to earn his opportunity, while also indicating that he wanted to face the most deserving opponent rather than rush into a January appearance.

He has now offered another explanation through a post on X, revealing that his remaining time as a professional fighter could be limited.

“My next fight is one of the last in my career.

“They say Prates is too dangerous for me and Morales is too good for me.

“So I want to face the best of them and prove to the world once again who is the best in world,” Makhachev wrote.

The statement adds another layer to the ongoing dispute, particularly as Makhachev previously discussed fighting three more times to reach a 20-fight winning streak. However, his latest comments suggest that his retirement plans may be closer than some expected. He has not provided a specific timeline for walking away from the sport.

Makhachev, 35, has established himself as one of the most successful fighters in UFC history. The former lightweight champion moved up to welterweight in 2025, defeated Jack Della Maddalena to capture the division’s title, and subsequently defended it against Ian Machado Garry at UFC 330.

He currently holds a 29-1 professional record and an unprecedented 17 consecutive UFC victories.
