Jorge Masvidal has seen enough of Ian Machado Garry to know how he thinks the UFC 330 main event ends: with Garry asleep.
Machado Garry challenges welterweight champion Islam Makhachev in the UFC 330 headliner on August 15 at the Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia. Masvidal doesn’t buy the Irishman’s chances of surviving Makhachev’s grappling, and he laid out exactly how he expects it to go on the “Deep Waters” podcast.
Nah, I think he’s getting choked to sleep. That’s at least what I’m hoping for. I hope Makhachev goes in there, manhandles his ass, gets his neck, and puts his ass to sleep.
Masvidal gives Machado Garry an edge on the feet but believes Makhachev’s ground advantage dwarfs it, pointing to a level of wrestling the challenger simply hasn’t dealt with.
His defense isn’t bad, and his footwork is what I think keeps it amazing, but he’s never grappled with a guy like Makhachev that has sweeps, the inside trips, the upper body.
He does see a path for Machado Garry to have early success, before the champion grinds him down.
He’s just going to be able to keep Makhachev the first two rounds, but I think after the third round when people start to get tired and the legs are with a little bit of lactic acid, Makhachev is going to start to really take over.
Machado Garry, 17-1, enters as a sizable underdog against the pound-for-pound great. Makhachev, 28-1, is making the first defense of the welterweight title he took from Jack Della Maddalena.
