Robert Whittaker is finally set to return to Sydney, but securing an opponent for the former UFC middleweight champion proved more complicated than expected.
Whittaker will face Bogdan Guskov in the co-main event of UFC Sydney on February 6 at Afterpay Arena. The matchup marks his second outing in the light heavyweight division following a successful debut against Nikita Krylov at UFC 329 in July.
The Australian has not competed in Sydney since finishing Clint Hester in 2014. After more than a decade away from his hometown, the upcoming event carries special significance for the veteran fighter.
Robert Whittaker Says Several Fighters Turned Down UFC Sydney Bout
The 35-year-old expressed appreciation for Guskov accepting the challenge, particularly after other fighters were unavailable or declined the opportunity.
Props to Bogdan,” Whittaker said. “There were other names thrown in the hat. Everyone was either tied up or had excuses why they couldn’t do it, yada yada yada. We got to where we are. Someone took the fight, flying all the way to Sydney to do it. It’s going to be great.
Guskov enters the contest following a setback against former UFC light heavyweight champion Magomed Ankalaev. The Uzbekistani fighter was stopped in the fifth round of their July clash at UFC Abu Dhabi, ending a four-fight finishing streak.
Whittaker is not overlooking the challenge presented by Guskov, who possesses a significant size and reach advantage. “The Reaper” believes his opponent’s physical attributes could make the contest particularly dangerous if he allows him to land cleanly.
Bogdan’s a dangerous guy. He’s tall. He’s rangy. He’s got light heavyweight power. If he gets a shot on me, it’s going to hurt,” Whittaker said.
The former middleweight champion emphasized that his approach will remain straightforward, relying on movement, precision, and defensive discipline.
The game plan is the same: Hit and don’t get hit. Keep it very simple. It’s going to be fun.
Whittaker’s move to light heavyweight began with a third-round TKO victory over Krylov at UFC 329 in July.
