UFC 329 went down July 11 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, headlined by Conor McGregor’s return against Max Holloway in a welterweight main event. Max Holloway defeated Conor McGregor in just over a minute after McGregor suffered another leg injury.
McGregor suffered an injury to his right leg after attempting a jumping kick in the fight’s first move, which brought an end to the bout about a minute later.
McGregor vs. Holloway result
Welterweight: Max Holloway def. Conor McGregor via TKO (injury) (Rd. 1, 1:09) The fight was ultimately anticlimactic. McGregor jumped forward with a high kick, which he missed. Upon replay, McGregor injured the leg on landing. McGregor continued to try to attack, slipping two more times. Just over a minute in, McGregor winced in pain, causing referee Mike Beltran to stop the fight.
Co-main and main card results
Lightweight: Paddy Pimblett def. Benoit Saint Denis via submission (D’Arce Choke) (Rd. 1, 0:52) — Pimblett blocked a high kick from BSD, who then level changed. Pimblett then jumped for a guillotine, before transitioning to a tight D’Arce, which put BSD to sleep.
Bantamweight: Mario Bautista def. Cory Sandhagen via unanimous decision (29-28 x3) — Bautista and Sandhagen fought a close and competitive fight for two rounds, with Sandhagen beating Bautista to the punch consistently. But a Suloev stretch submission attempt at the end of the first, which damaged Sandhagen’s leg, and a massive third-round rally gave the judges’ nod to Bautista, earning him revenge in this rematch.
Flyweight: Brandon Royval def. Lone’er Kavanagh via submission (rear-naked choke) (Rd. 3, 3:40) — After a clear first round for Royval thanks to his striking, Kavanagh rocked him with an elbow in the second round, and the two traded blows over the course of the middle five minutes. While Kavanagh attempted to get the fight to the ground in the third, he’d pay for it, as Royval got on top and worked him over en route to locking up the choke.
Lightweight: King Green def. Terrance McKinney via TKO (Rd. 1, 4:59) — McKinney came out in his usual guns blazing style, busting Green open in the first minute and nearly finishing him. But Green weathered the storm and caught McKinney with a couple of body shots, folding him and finishing him with just one second left in the first round — a sure-fire Comeback of the Year and Round of the Year nominee.
Prelim results
Light Heavyweight: Robert Whittaker def. Nikita Krylov via TKO (Rd. 3, 1:01) — After struggling with a size disadvantage and Krylov’s grappling, Whittaker’s striking was still on point at 205, cracking Krylov on a number of occasions. Whittaker scored the win after breaking Krylov’s jaw early in the third round.
Heavyweight: Gable Steveson def. Elisha Ellison via KO (Rd. 1, 2:31) — Steveson and Ellison delivered in an entertaining brawl. Despite a controversial foul call and getting tagged, Steveson’s powerful striking was on full display, finishing Ellison with a flurry of shots against the fence.
Bantamweight: Adrian Yanez def. Cody Garbrandt via TKO (Rd. 1, 2:47) — Garbrandt got off to a fast start, but Yanez’s heavy and speedy striking got the best of the former champion, who exited the cage carrying gloves in hand.
Featherweight: Luke Riley def. Kai Kamaka III via TKO (Rd. 1, 3:03) — Despite split feelings on the stoppage amongst the MMA community, Riley’s striking was on point, as a right hand started a flurry to get him another first-round finish.
Women’s Flyweight: Wang Cong def. Tracy Cortez via unanimous decision (29-27 x3) — Despite getting deducted a point for an illegal knee in round two, Cong brutally battered Cortez, particularly damaging one of her legs, for a clear victory.
Middleweight: Damian Pinas def. Cesar Almeida via KO (Rd. 1, 4:44) — Pinas landed a brutal right hand late in the first round to put Almeida out cold.
Bantamweight: Farid Basharat def. John Garza via unanimous decision (30-27 x2, 29-28) — Basharat’s undefeated record controversially remains intact, as he used his takedowns and wrestling to fend off Garza, who took this fight on mere days’ notice.
Middleweight: Ryan Gandra def. Zachary Reese via TKO (Rd. 1, 1:15) — Gandra landed a solid left hook that dropped Reese, finishing things with a few follow-up shots.
Flyweight: Alessandro Costa def. Cody Durden via submission (rear-naked choke) (Rd. 2, 2:19) — After both men got their shots in during the first period, Costa got the fight to the ground and secured a tight choke for the victory.
