Colby Covington has advice for Gable Steveson, and it starts with firing Jon Jones.
Steveson was knocked out by Sean Sharaf in 12 seconds at UFC 331 on Saturday, ending his unbeaten start. Jones was part of his corner and was caught on camera looking stunned at the finish.
Covington told Submission Radio on Monday that he saw it coming.
You know, he was over-hyping himself, overlooking other competitors, and he just thought he was invincible. When you get away from what brought you to the dance, that’s never going to be good for you.
The former interim welterweight champion then turned on Jones, a longtime rival.
Jon Jones is bad energy. That guy’s a demon, man.
Covington said Steveson needs a different environment.
You’ve got to surround yourself in this life with good people that are like-minded, that work hard, that have faith in God, and aren’t just freaking piece of —- people like Jon Jones.
So, he should definitely cut Jon Jones, get to a new camp, get focused, start believing, and start using his wrestling.
Steveson won Olympic gold in freestyle wrestling in 2021 but stood and traded with Sharaf, who had lost both of his previous UFC fights. Joe Rogan made a similar point about overconfidence on the broadcast, though without blaming Jones.
