Ian Machado Garry is already making room for UFC gold ahead of the biggest fight of his career.
The Irish welterweight contender is set to challenge Islam Makhachev for the UFC welterweight championship in the UFC 330 main event on August 15 at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia. Despite entering the bout as a significant underdog, Garry appears to have little doubt about how the night will end.
During a video call with his new manager, boxing promoter Eddie Hearn, “The Future” revealed that he has already prepared a spot at home for the UFC welterweight title. An empty frame currently hangs above his Cage Warriors championship belt, with Garry seemingly planning to replace it with UFC gold.
The 17-1 fighter then explained exactly why he has already made room for the belt.
As much as I respect Islam, as much as I know how good he is, and I know how talented he is, I know that I can beat him if I go out there and do what I believe I can do.
Garry enters the matchup with a 10-1 UFC record, while Makhachev brings a 17-1 promotional record and a remarkable 28-1 mark overall. The Russian champion has not lost since 2015 and captured the welterweight title in his first fight in the division, defeating Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 322.
Makhachev’s dominance has made him a heavy favorite heading into Philadelphia, particularly given his elite wrestling and submission game. “The Future”, however, believes his skill set can produce the upset and has made it clear that he is approaching the fight with championship-level confidence.
