Despite some early trouble, Jai Herbert managed to use his striking to come out on top in a back-and-forth affair with Matheus Camilo in the co-main event of UFC Vegas 122.
Camilo circled on the outside to start, as Herbert looked to use his size advantage to try and walk him down and pressure him. Both men threw a lot, but not a lot seemed to land in the first five minutes. Late in the round, however, Camilo landed a right hand that appeared to wobble Herbert, who went back to the fence. Camilo then added a takedown before the round’s end.
Camilo brought the fight back to the ground in round two, and he put Herbert in trouble by getting to the back and threatening a choke. Herbert, however, managed to get on top late in the round and landed shots upstairs, busting Camilo up.
Herbert used his reach to pepper Camilo with punches and leg kicks early in the third. Herbert continued to land and bloodied Camilo more, and then he solidified things by stuffing a Camilo takedown attempt in the final minute.
Herbert strings wins together for the first time since his days as a champion in Cage Warriors. He entered this fight off a first-round finish of Mandel Nallo this past April.
