Despite nearly being stopped in the second round by Eduardo “Chapolin” Henrique, Charles Johnson pulled off a come-from-behind victory with the Scottish Twister submission in round three.
It is just the second time that a UFC bout has finished via the Scottish Twister. In fact, the first came just a couple of months ago, when Murtazali Magomedov scored a submission victory with one in his UFC debut, defeating Melsik Baghdasaryan at UFC Vegas 119.
The “normal” variation of the Twister has only been done by three men in UFC history — “The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung, Bryce Mitchell, and Da’Mon Blackshear.
Henrique seemed to get a strong start to the fight in the opening frame with his striking; however, an eye poke and an illegal knee cost Henrique a point. He then seemed to be close to finishing the fight in round two, when he rocked and dropped Johnson with a left hook.
Johnson survived that, however, and in the third, he gained momentum suddenly by hurting Henrique with a front kick to the body. Johnson then got him to the ground, locking up the Scottish Twister for the win.
This is a huge rebound for Johnson after being the victim of a different special submission in late June, losing via Suloev Stretch to Asu Almabayev.
