Former UFC Fighter's TKO Win Overturned to Disqualification

Khusein Askhabov's TKO win over Reinaldo Ekson in Copenhagen was overturned to a disqualification, and he and his cornermen received 12-month suspensions.

Khusein Askhabov’s win in Copenhagen is now a loss.

The Danish MMA Federation announced Monday that it overturned Askhabov’s first-round TKO of Reinaldo Ekson to a disqualification. The lightweight bout was the co-main event of Airtox Dominance FC 8 on Oct. 17.

The trouble started during a timeout for an eye poke. Askhabov went after Ekson, chaos broke out, and the referee eventually awarded Askhabov the TKO. Ekson’s team protested on social media, and the federation sided with them.

Having reviewed the incident, DMMAF has determined that Askhabov’s actions during the timeout constituted a serious violation of the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts and warranted disqualification, regardless of the circumstances surrounding the initial stoppage.

Askhabov and his cornermen were also suspended for 12 months from all DMMAF-sanctioned events and activities, in any capacity.

DMMAF strongly condemns the conduct displayed during the incident. Attempts to attack an opponent during a timeout, disregard for the referee’s instructions, and unauthorised interference from corner teams are unacceptable and have no place in professional MMA.

Ekson welcomed the ruling when he spoke with MMA Fighting.

The federation’s decision was fair. At no point did I want to tarnish my opponent’s reputation or harm him, but justice prevailed. I was wronged by what happened, and thank God the federation made a fair decision.

Ekson said the trouble began with an illegal shot to the back of his head, followed by a thumb to the eye after a takedown. He said Askhabov then taunted him while a doctor examined him.

He started taunting me while I was being examined by the doctor, calling me to fight. I told him ‘f— you.’ He got angry and came at me, along with his team.

Askhabov pushed back in a comment on the federation’s Instagram post.

I came there to fight. That’s all I wanted. Throughout the fight, my opponent repeatedly insulted me and tried to provoke me.

I understand that emotions were high and mistakes were made. It is even not a no contest? But how on earth does he get declared the winner? How he beat me? I came to fight, not to watch someone walk away and get rewarded with a win.

The fans saw this! You can punish me for actions, but that doesn’t mean my opponent deserves a victory he didn’t earn inside the cage. Where is the fairness in that? This decision makes absolutely no sense to me.

I want to make one thing absolutely clear: I never had any intention of hurting my opponent or anyone from his team.

Askhabov’s only UFC appearance was a February 2023 loss to Jamall Emmers, the first defeat of his career.
