Alexander Volkanovski’s dominance on top of the featherweight division continues, as he ends the undefeated record of Movsar Evloev to retain his championship in the UFC 333 main event.
The opening frame proved to be close, as Volkanovski landed more strikes, but his timing appeared to be slower than usual. Evloev not only had the speed, but he was mixing in his grappling and takedown work as well.
Evloev appeared to get a takedown early in round two, but Volkanovski quickly found an opening to reverse and get on top. That proved to be the turning point, as Volkanovski took over with his striking.
Then, with seconds left in the round, Volkanovski cracked Evloev with a left hand, followed by a right hand that dropped Evloev. Follow-up shots from Volkanovski stopped the bout with just six seconds left in round two, giving Volkanovski yet another featherweight title defense on his resume.
Volkanovski, in his second run as UFC featherweight champion, defeated Diego Lopes to reclaim the championship at UFC 314. He retained the title against Lopes in a rematch at UFC 325 in January.
