What’s at stake

Morocco is a tournament night. The winners of the bantamweight, welterweight and lightweight semifinals advance to the PFL Africa Finals later this year. It is PFL’s first event in North Africa, and the league calls it the biggest MMA event in Moroccan history. PFL Africa general manager Elias Schulze said the league is looking “to go to all four corners of the continent.”

Kane and Medkouri headline in Casablanca

Senegal’s Abdoulaye Kane (5-2) meets Morocco’s Badr “Dastan” Medkouri (9-3) in a heavyweight bout that sits outside the tournament brackets. All five of Kane’s wins came by stoppage, four by knockout and one by submission. Medkouri has eight knockouts in nine wins and fights in front of a hometown crowd.

The card has changed

PFL announced unbeaten Algerian-Canadian Karim Henniene (7-0) against Nigeria’s Raphael Uchegbu (11-2) as the co-main bantamweight semifinal. Henniene no longer appears on PFL Africa’s event page, and Uchegbu is now listed against Alain Majorique. No official explanation turned up. Taha Bendaoud and Yanis Ghemmouri now sit second on the page at featherweight.

Five semifinals remain. At welterweight, Angola’s Shido Boris Esperança (12-2) faces South Africa’s Peace Nguphane (9-3), and Guinea-Bissau’s Rivaldo Pereira (4-2) meets Nigeria’s David Samuel (6-0). At lightweight, Nigeria’s Patrick Ocheme (9-1) takes on countryman Cornel Thompson (12-3), while Senegal’s Demba Seck (11-3) faces Chad’s Hussain Al Kurdi (3-0). At bantamweight, Liberia’s Dwight Joseph (16-3) meets Angola’s Boule Godogo (5-2).
