Semifinal Berths And A Heavyweight Main Event In Casablanca

PFL Africa: Morocco on Saturday, October 10, at the Mohammed V Sports Complex in Casablanca is a tournament night. Six semifinals across bantamweight, welterweight and lightweight sit alongside Abdoulaye Kane against Badr Medkouri in a heavyweight main event. The show starts at 6 p.m. local time, which is 1 p.m. ET.

What’s at stake

The three semifinal brackets decide who reaches the PFL Africa Finals later this year, so most of the 13 fights carry weight beyond one night. Fighters from nine African nations are on the card, and it is the promotion’s first stop in North Africa. PFL general manager Elias Schulze said when the matchups were announced in August that the company wants to “go to all four corners of the continent.”

The case for each fighter

Kane (5-2) is from Senegal and comes in off a first-round TKO loss to Justin Clarke at PFL Africa: Pretoria in April. Four of his five wins are knockouts and the other is a submission. Medkouri (9-3) is the home fighter, fighting in Morocco for the first time under the PFL banner, and eight of his nine wins came by knockout. Both men finish fights, so the open question is who survives the first exchanges.

The bantamweight semifinal is the other headline bout. Karim Henniene (7-0) faces Nigeria’s Raphael Uchegbu (11-2). Henniene submitted his last opponent in the first round at PFL Africa: Nigeria in June, while Uchegbu won by unanimous decision on the same card. Elsewhere, Liberia’s Dwight Joseph (16-3) meets Angola’s Boule Godogo (5-2), and the lightweight bracket includes an all-Nigerian pairing of Patrick Ocheme (9-1) and Cornel Thompson (12-3). In welterweight, Shido Boris Esperança (12-2) meets Peace Nguphane (9-3), and Rivaldo Pereira (4-2) meets the unbeaten David Samuel (6-0).
