Sean O’Malley is convinced he will get another shot at Petr Yan, but he isn’t so sure the reigning UFC bantamweight champion would choose him if given the option.
Yan retained his title at UFC 333 last weekend, defeating Merab Dvalishvili by unanimous decision in their thrilling trilogy fight in Abu Dhabi. With the Russian champion now looking toward his next challenger, O’Malley believes their long-awaited rematch is the biggest fight to make at 135 pounds.
However, “Suga” was surprised when Daniel Cormier brought up Song Yadong during Yan’s post-fight interview instead of mentioning him.
Sean O’Malley Questions Petr Yan’s Rematch Interest
Reacting to the fight on his YouTube channel, O’Malley suggested “No Mercy” might prefer facing other contenders rather than revisiting their rivalry.
I don’t think Petr Yan lays in bed and shakes and quivers thinking of fighting me,” O’Malley said. “I don’t think he’d pick me if he could choose.
O’Malley believes his physical attributes and fighting style present a different challenge from Yan’s recent opponents. He also questioned why Song entered the conversation when he had already defeated the Chinese contender by unanimous decision at UFC 324 in January.
I’m surprised Petr didn’t call me out,” O’Malley said. “I don’t know why. It’s the biggest fight to make.
The former champion then made his intentions unmistakable, insisting he expects to face Yan regardless of whom the UFC initially considers for the next title shot.
I’m fighting Petr Yan next. I don’t care, even if they announce Petr vs. Song, I’m still fighting Petr next,” O’Malley added. “It’s got to be me vs. Petr in the United States, early Q2, late Q1. Book it.

The rivalry dates back to UFC 280 in October 2022, when O’Malley edged Yan by split decision in a controversial contest. The result remains debated, with many observers believing Yan did enough to earn the victory.
Since then, both fighters have continued building their resumes. “Suga” defeated Song at UFC 324 before knocking out Aiemann Zahabi at UFC Freedom 250 in June, while Song has since earned victories over Deiveson Figueiredo and Umar Nurmagomedov.
